Brunei Darussalam’s Siong Racing Team who is set to leave the country next week for the F1 Powerboat World Championship Grand Prix in China finished third in the category in what was seen as a good preparation before departing for the Mainland of China.
The brother’s duo, Affendy Hj Kadri and Yanto Hj Kadri of X-Treme Viking showed no mercy to the other drivers including Maarof Mahari of Siong Racing Team by showing an impressive run from the start to control the race till the chequered flag. Siong Racing Team owner, Yii Tian Siong who put the trust on Maarof Mahari to piloted his powerboat in China next week said Maarof has shown a great performance in yesterday’s race however some technical problems inlcuding engine failure has dented Maarof’s performance to showcase his racing ability.
“We are a bit unlucky in today’s race due to some unexpected problems. Luck is not on our side today. However, we in the team are very happy with the result as Maarof manage to overcome the pressure from the Sarawakian drivers,” said the team owner yesterday. Another Brunei team, Miratrisya Racing team finished fourth in the F3000 category. Meanwhile, former Siong Racing Team driver, Ismail Hj Kabon who is now standing on his own feet by driving Seri Laila powerboat has shown his own class to the local spectators by winning several categories yesterday.
He first dominated both races in the 50 horsepower category. In the morning session of the 50 horsepower, Ismail left behind team Shadow 77 from Kapit and Suka-Suka 12 of Brunei Darussalam who finished second and third place respectively. Ismail then continued with his brilliant performance in the afternoon session putting his same morning rivals to settle in the same finishing. After failing to make the cut in the morning SST60 race category, Ismail mark his return with a win in the afternoon race of the said category. He ousted team X-Treme Viking and Sibu based Meligai Warrior who settles in the second and third place respectively.
The morning session of the SST60 category was won by team Meligai Warrior followed by another Brunei team Eighty Ninety and X-Treme Viking.
“This is a good start for me and the association (Brunei Powerboat
Association) to represent the country in this competition. We are
looking forward for more races in the future. And as for today, i am
really happy with the wins,” said Ismail when interviewed by the Borneo
Bulletin after the race yesterday.

The 46-year-old retired soldier will take part in two categories - 60 horsepower race and F3000 his two specialties.
When contacted yesterday, Maarof said this was a very good opportunity for him to exercise his vast experience and to improve his skills before heading to China.

Maarof who will be racing for Siong Racing Team will take part in three races in China.
They will be competing first in Linyi (Oct 2-3) before heading to Liuzhou (Oct 16-17) and the final race in Shenzhen (Oct 23-24).

H ooters Group from Brunei get ready for powerboat F1 journey
AFTER an absence of six years from the F1 World Championship, the Siong Racing Team are staging a comeback and they intend to make an instant impact.
The five men departed the Brunei International Airport in Berakas yesterday for China, where they will compete in Linyi from October 2-3 for the first of three Grand Prix of China.
Team manager Yii Tian Siong will lead the five-men delegation, and expects nothing but the best from them to make the Sultanate proud in the sport of powerboat racing.
"We want to win. At the very least, a top 10 finish will be good enough," said the determined Yii. Siong Racing Team made their debut in the Championship back in 2003. Former driver Ismail Hj Kabon placed 18 of 24 in Singapore.
This time however Yii had recruited the services of Maarof Mahari to pilot the F1 powerboat. The 46-year-old has more than 20 years of experience piloting various classes of powerboats: F3000, SST60, and SST45. "I chose Maarof because of three factors. First he is experienced in the sport, I have known him since way back when I used to race myself. He's still actively participating in powerboat races around the region," said the team manager.
Maarof recently grabbed third place in the F3000 category of the Kanowit Powerboat Festival 2010, held at the Batang Rajang river in Kanowit, Sarawak, on September 19.
"Secondly, he is knowledgeable about engines and third, he knows his way with the powerboats," said Yii. Though it will be his first time competing at such a big stage, Maarof was calm and composed.
"I'm not nervous at all. Actually I'm happy because I have been given the opportunity to race," said the pilot.
Amongst the opponents Maarof will face in the race are top drivers Thani Al-Qamzi and Ahmed Al Hameli.
The Team Abu Dhabi duo currently sits in first and third place of the driver standings respectively.
In second is the 2008 F1 World Champion, Jay Price of Qatar Team.
Assistant team manager Hj Karim Hj Kadir, mechanic Md Safwan Abdullah Teo and crewman Md Sahrol Lizam Daud completes the five-men team.
They will touch down at the Sultanate on October 12, before departing again for the next two races in Liuzhou (October 16-17) and Shenzhen (October 23-24).
Present to send them off yesterday was the president of the 4WD Brunei Association, Hj Ibrahim Hj Awg Damit. The Brunei Times.

Lin Yi, China welcomes the first driver from Brunei to race in the UIM F1 World Champion Series
2nd October. The brand new watersports arena at Lin Yi, China marks two important landmarks in the history of UIM World F1. The first is the arrival of Brunai pilot Maarof Bin Mahari who joins the Team Azerbaijan alongside team captain Jonas Andersson and Marit Stromoy. Maarof is the second new driver in this inaugural event in Lin Yi, the other new face is Tim Seebold, although of course Tim has won many championships in the USA. This is Tim's first sortee into the UIM World F1 Championship. The addition of Brunai takes the total number of nations competing in F1 to eleven.
The other Lin Yi landmark is the addition of a fleet of F4 boats which will act as a support series to F1 and it also gives young drivers the opportunity to compete on a world stage. Each boat is painted in the same livery as the F1 team they represent and although it's too early to predict the likely overall champion, the Team Rainbow boat, a Molgaard looks the fastest after the first qualifying session.
